Power 17.01.08

By Gunawan Rudy posted in archive, quote. Thursday, Jan 17th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Lord Acton (or John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton, 1st Baron Acton, KCVO)–a British historian of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries–wrote a letter to Mandell Creighton, also a British historian. He said…

I cannot accept your canon that we are to judge Pope and King unlike other men, with a favorable presumption that they did not wrong. If there is any presumption it is the other way against holders of power, increasing as the power increases. Historic responsibility has to make up for the want of legal responsibility. All power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority: still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority.
– Letter to Mandell Creighton (April 1887)

As one of the greatest classical liberal historians of all time, he stated that a person’s sense of morality lessens as his or her power increases. Yes, I know, he was more the historian then the political theorist.

…Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men…
– Lord Acton’s Dictum

Though it isn’t my intention with this quote to deal with Acton’s ideas to any extent, I can’t help but touch upon of what Acton thought the power management should be. In your opinion, is that (quote) true?

    *memahami*

A bit agreed. Great power tends to corrupt, especially when it comes to those who cannot handle it rightly. “Great power comes with great responsibility,” as said by Peter Parker. :P

  11. But absolute power only corrupts absolutely for those who can’t handle it rightly. Absolute power tends to corrupt, but not always corrupt. That’s what I think for being — if not supporter — of fascist ideology. :?

  12. Jah! Kok ga bisa strikethrough pakai del? :| Quatro quadtrick.

  37. …Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men…
    – Lord Acton’s Dictum

For some reason, I keep seeing this quote around you; the blog, your signature at Gotei, and other places…

Well, that put aside, I’ll just speak out my opinion. Power is indeed a double-edged sword, and not everyone can handle that. Sometimes people start out with good intentions, when they do receive it, their plans take a little detour to the wrong direction.

Well, the thing is, when you’re in a position of power, other people will not only be under your command, but also your responsibility. And since as humans, we have our biases and priorities, we won’t be able to be fair to all these people… And as I keep being told, people do “bad” things because the opportunity presents itself; if someone has a large authority over people, the opportunity would technically be BEGGING to be misused.

Even if someone were to mean well, can they handle all the power?

    /nggak jelas

  38. but we always need Great men, arent we??

  39. he was a Roman Catholic, dude

A Roman Catholic of a sophisticated kind, I presume. :-j

  42. @Goenawan Lee:
Ja, kekuatan absolut tidak selalu disalahgunakan. “Tidak selalu” bisa berarti “jarang”. :-? Mungkin ya pada Paus dan Raja-raja jaman dulu. :-? Saya kurang tahu kalau di Inggris, tapi di Jerman pada tahun segitu justru lagi ada konflik antara Pangeran-pangeran.
